~ Clearwater Fishing Report ~

Come fish the beautiful Clearwater River, located in North
Central Idaho. The Clearwater River is home to strong runs of
Steelhead and Spring Chinook.
Clearwater River Company LLC owns CL2 and CL3 permits, which
allow the use of drift boats from Lewiston to Kooskia, Idaho
(over 80 river miles). Depending on the time of year and the
section of river being fished our guests will either stay in
Lewiston, Orofino, or Kamiah, Idaho. All of these cities are
easily accessible by Idaho’s State Highway 12. The closest major
airport is in Spokane Washington, 145 miles from Orofino Idaho.
The average Clearwater River Steelhead is 13 pounds with
numerous fish over 20 pounds being landed each season. The catch
and release season for Steelhead is July 1 through October 14
and is a great time for those who want to miss the crowds. The
catch and keep season for Steelhead begins October 15 and runs
through April 30.

Remarkable Spey and Fly fishing for Steelhead can be had during
the months of September and October. The low water conditions
make this time of year very conducive for swinging flies to
these majestic creatures.

Once the water temperatures start to drop and the water levels
raise the fish are more apt to take hardware and bait rather
than a fly on the swing. Side-drifting, bobber and jig, bobber
and bait and back-trolling plugs are the preferred methods to
take these hard fighting fish during the cold winter months.

The
Clearwater River Spring Chinook are one of the most sought-after
fish that migrate inland from the Pacific Ocean. The
Spring Chinook’s size and remarkable table fair make them a
prized catch. The average Clearwater River Chinook is 20 pounds
with larger fish pushing the scale needle over the 30 pound
mark. The Spring Chinook fishery opens at the end of April and
typically closes mid-June. Bobber and jig, bobber and bait,
back-bouncing bait and back-trolling plugs are the most common
techniques to catch these large fish.
